Robert Pope (priest)
Robert William Pope, , was an eminent Anglican clergyman in the 20th century.
He was born on 20 May 1916〔Who's Who 1992 “(London, A & C Black ISBN 0-7136-3514-2)〕 and educated at Durham University. He was ordained deacon in 1939 and priest in 1940 and began his career with curacies at Holy Trinity, Gravesend and St. Nicolas' Church, Guildford.〔''Crockford's Clerical Directory 1975-76'' London: Oxford University Press, 1976 ISBN 0-19-200008-X〕 In 1944 he joined the Royal Navy as a chaplain〔(ARMY, NAVY AND AIR FORCE CHAPLAINS 1800 TO 1960 )〕 serving until 1971 when he became vicar of Whitchurch. In 1977 he was appointed Dean of Gibraltar,〔(Deans of Gibraltar )〕 a post he held until 1982. He died on 15 September 2002.
